Be Bold…Not Cold!

When temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, it’s easy to want to curl up and hibernate all winter. But here in the North Country, where snow stays on the ground until March and Beyond, we’ve got to bundle up, brave the cold, and be adventurous. Getting fresh air and vitamin D is so important, especially during these cold, dark months of the year! We are lucky to live where there are so many opportunities to get out there and have some fun in the cold! We’re here to tell you about all the exciting outdoor winter activities that you can do in the North Country to stay active and healthy outdoors.

Ice Skating

Recently there’s been a roller-skating frenzy circling social media, but what about ice skating?! So many North Country towns have gorgeous ice-skating rinks that are extremely well taken care of! The ice is waiting for you in Lancaster, Whitefield, Bethlehem, and Littleton the next time you’re in the mood to skate!

Sledding

Sledding is one of the most basic, exciting activities you can do in the winter with the whole family! All you have to do is find a hill (we recommend Colonel Town Recreation in Lancaster, Remick Park in Littleton or we hear Dalton Ridge Runners have opened up for sledding at their clubhouse!) a sled, and a friend and you’ll have the time of your life! And if, for some reason, you don’t have sleds, use cardboard boxes!

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding

As many people know, Northern NH is home to some of the best skiing mountains in the United States. While we may be biased, we 100% recommend them! This winter, check out Bretton Woods, Cannon Mountain, Wildcat and Loon Mountain. For a great and affordable alternative check out The Prospect Ski Tow in Lancaster or Mt Eustis in Littleton.

Nordic Skiing

If you’re not much of a downhill skier, Nordic might be the winter sport for you! There are rentable skis and groomed trails at most local ski resorts. Nansen Ski Club maintains miles of trails in Milan, and Great Glen Trails at the base of Mt Washington is also sure to please! Cross Country skiing is a great way to get outside and get active in the winter!

Snow Machining

Of course, we can’t forget a classic – snow machining! There are trails and events coming all throughout the North Country. You can ride around all day and explore the beautiful nature that Northern NH has to offer! Stop in and warm up at a warming hut, or even ride right into town and get a hot meal in some places!

We hope that you all take advantage these last few months of winter and learn to enjoy bundling up and braving the cold! Fresh air does wonders for the mind and soul, and we think these activities are the perfect way for you and the whole family to get outside during the cold, snowy months of winter. Always be prepared…there are many local clubs and destinations that host pages on Facebook with current conditions, weather forecasts and more to help you have a safe and successful adventure.
