January 2023

The North Country has always been a hidden gem. The winding roads, classic architecture and breathtaking views are an everyday experience for us locals. It is easy to get caught up in the ins and outs of everyday life and overlook these things that make our home so special. We have decided to take some time to focus on all the things that we love about the area. The things that we have driven by a million times, the places we stop in every week, and the places that bring back our fondest memories.

It is winter, so let’s talk snow, even though it has been a slow go up until now! Many of our towns flourished and became known across the country for our love and support of winter sports. Over the years things may change, but a deep connection to these activities still exists.
If you travel Route 16 north between Berlin and Milan, you surely have passed by a true icon of winter sport. The Big Nansen Ski Jump soars high above it’s surroundings and instills awe and wonder in all who see it. Built in 1936-38 the jump was the tallest in eastern United States for nearly 50 years. This amazing structure has recently been the focus of major restorations and improvements. There is now a secondary jump, Little Nansen, that is earning its place in the world of ski jumping as well. Many schools from around New England have competitive Ski Jumping teams, and they are competing on the Little Nansen this year!

January 28 and 29, 2023 is a the time to experience the Annual Winter Carnival being held by the Nansen Ski Club. This ski club is the oldest continually operating ski club in America, and also maintains a beautiful network of cross country ski and snowshoe trails at nearby Milan State Park. This great outing for families, gives everyone a chance to experience the North Country the way it has been for centuries…in the brisk winter air! They will be having the always fun Art Sled Race on Saturday at Noon and on Sunday there will be an Eastern Division Ski Jump Competition.
